Getting Started: A Pioneering Approach to Culture Change in Long-Term Care Organizations
By Susan Misiorski. Published by the Pioneer Network, August 2004. Getting Started introduces readers to the culture change journey. The introduction defines culture change and makes a strong argument for why long-term care organizations should join this movement to transform nursing homes into person-centered communities in which residents and workers thrive. In subsequent chapters, readers are introduced to the personal stories of individuals who have embraced culture change, a process for assessing their organization’s readiness for change, and the importance of examining and realigning values, mission, and vision statements. The majority of the handbook, however, is devoted to 13 training modules designed to introduce culture change values to the entire nursing home community and to begin the process of transformation. The modules include detailed facilitator guides and handouts. Getting Started is available through the Pioneer Network for $259. Go to http://www.pioneernetwork.net

Voices From the Trenches: The world of the certified nursing assistant (features CHCA aide Paula Vereen)
Voices from the Trenches, a 25-minute videotape from Aquarius Productions, follows three direct-care workers as they both go about and talk about their work-in Florida, Minnesota, and the South Bronx. From their stories, viewers see the rewards and the challenges of direct-care work, and understand the compassion that these workers bring to their jobs. Scenes of the three workers, including Cooperative Home Care Associates aide Paula Vereen, are intercut with a meeting of CHCA’s political action group, which is educating and empowering workers so that they can bring their voices into the public arena. CHCA’s Ana Walker sums up the videotape’s message when she says: “We just have to keep speaking and talking until somebody listens to us . . . let them know that we’re functioning, but we are not satisfied with what we are getting. We should be getting more, because we do a very important job. A lot of people depend on us.”
